You Can't Give a Child Confidence

You Can't Give a Child Confidence

One reason I'm so passionate about martial arts for kids is because I've seen the effect on my own children.

My son Franklin was very timid.

He wasn't naturally the most confident kid.

And as a father, obviously you want your child to believe in himself.

You want to tell them:

“You can do it.”

“Believe in yourself.”

“Be confident.”

But I've learned something.

You can't simply give somebody confidence.

They have to build it.

That's why real confidence takes time.

A child learns something difficult.

They struggle.

They finally do it.

That's one piece of evidence.

They spar with someone.

They're nervous.

They make it through.

Another piece of evidence.

They lose.

They come back.

Another piece.

They start understanding their body.

They get stronger.

They become more coordinated.

Little by little, the child begins telling himself:

“I've done hard things before.”

“I can figure this out.”

“I can handle this.”

That's confidence.

It's not loud.

It's not pretending you're the toughest kid in the room.

It's self-belief built from experience.

That's what I've been fortunate enough to watch with my own son.

And it's one of the reasons I believe so much in long-term martial arts training for children.

Not because they're going to become unbeatable.

Not because every kid needs to become a fighter.

But because martial arts constantly gives children small opportunities to prove something to themselves.

If your child is shy, timid or struggling with confidence, I wouldn't promise that one martial arts class will magically change them.

That's not how it works.

But give them time.

Give them consistency.

Give them a positive environment where they can struggle safely and keep improving.

You might be surprised by who they start becoming.
